Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006) of the International Labour Organization (ILO), which is the main legal act of protection of seafarers's rights to date, came into force on 20 August 2013.  It provides a comprehensive worldwide protection of seafarers’ rights and establishes fair competition conditions for states and ship-owners that have undertaken to provide appropriate work and living conditions for seafarers protecting them from unfair competition. By the Republic of Latvia, The MLC, 2006 was ratified on 12 August 2011.

To avoid possible unfair work conditions and contract terms, and those that does not meet requirements of MLC, 2006, Registry of Seamen suggests to choose employment on vessels whose flag state has ratified the MLC, 2006.

The list of states that have ratified MLC, 2006 can be found in the section "Number of ILO member States having ratified the Convention” of ILO website.
