Good to know (general information)

Self driven recreational craft up to 12 meters in length can be registered with the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD). Recreational crafts registered in the CSDD are not allowed to be used outside the territory of the Republic of Latvia.

Sailing recreational crafts are registered in the Ship Register of Maritime Administration of Latvia.

Recreational crafts used for commercial activities are registered in the Ship Register of Maritime Administration of Latvia. Recreational crafts registered with the CSDD are not allowed to be used for commercial activities.

Before registration in the Ship Register of Maritime Administration of Latvia, recreational crafts must undergo a pre-registration inspection, which is carried out by the Maritime Safety Inspectorate of the Maritime Administration of Latvia. Inspections are a paid service.

Self-built recreational crafts may not be used for commercial activities. In order for a self-built recreational craft to be used for commercial activities, a post-construction assessment of the recreational craft must be carried out and, if necessary, a recreational craft conversion must be carried out. This is an expensive and time-consuming measure, therefore it is recommended to use industrially built recreational crafts for commercial activities that comply with the Cabinet of Ministers Regulation No. 27 of 12 January 2016 “Regulations on the Construction, Conformity Assessment and Offering on the Market of Recreational Craft and Personal Watercraft”.

Recreational crafts used for commercial activities must undergo periodic inspections every two years. These inspections are carried out by the Maritime Safety Inspectorate of the Maritime Administration of Latvia. Inspections are a paid service.

All Category A recreational crafts and those Category B recreational crafts used for commercial activities are equipped with a EPIRB, which is registered with the Maritime Safety Inspectorate of the Maritime Administration of Latvia. Registration of a EPIRB is a paid service.
