Good to know (general information)

Cargo and passenger ships are  registered in the Ship Register of the Maritime Administration of Latvia.

Cargo and passenger ships may undergo a pre-registration survey by the Maritime Safety Inspectorate of the Maritime Administration of Latvia before registration in the Ship Register of the Maritime Administration of Latvia.

Cargo and inland waterway passenger vessels may be under the technical supervision of the Maritime Safety Inspectorate of the Maritime Administration of Latvia or a classification society.

Surveys of cargo and inland waterway passenger vessels and the relevant certificates shall be issued, endorsed, extended and cancelled in accordance with Cabinet Regulation No. 49 Adopted 29 January 2008 “Regulations Regarding the Safety of Ships”. If a ship is under the technical supervision of a classification society, the scope and frequency of surveys shall be determined by the classification society.

Supervision of passenger ships engaged in domestic trade shall be carried out by a recognised organisation.

For domestic passenger ships operating, surveys and certificates shall be issued, extended and cancelled in accordance with the Cabinet Regulation No. 451 Adopted 14 June 2011 Regulations Regarding the Safety Requirements for the Passenger Ships Engaged in Domestic Voyages.

In cases where the classification society carries out technical supervision of the ship, the Maritime Safety Inspectorate shall carry out additional inspections of the ship annually in accordance with paragraph 9.1 of the Cabinet Regulation No. 439 Adopted 7 June 2011 Regulations Regarding the Implementation of Flag State Supervision of Ships.

Only equipment complying with Cabinet Regulation No. 34 Adopted 17 January 2017 Regulations Regarding the Marine Equipment may be installed on cargo and passenger ships.

Operating a vessel without valid Certificates is prohibited.

Additional vessels must obtain a a Minimum Safe Manning Document and a REGISTRATION CARD FOR 406 MHz EPIRB.
