Recognised organisation means a classification society recognised in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 391/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 April 2009 on common rules and standards for ship inspection and survey organisations.
Authorisation of recognised organisations shall be carried out by the Maritime Safety Inspectorate of the Maritime Administration of Latvia in accordance with Cabinet Regulation No. 424 Adopted 31 May 2011 Procedures for the Supervision of Classification Companies (Recognised Organisations).
The Maritime Administration of Latvia shall not refuse authorisation to any of the recognised organisations, but in certain cases, in agreement with the Ministry of Transport, may limit the number of recognised organisations, providing objective justification for such action (for example, if there is no Latvian flagged ship under the supervision of the recognised organisation).
The Maritime Administration of Latvia shall authorise a recognised organisation based in a third country if the third country provides equivalent operational opportunities to recognised organisations based in the European Union and the European Economic Area.
The Maritime Administration of Latvia shall conclude an authorisation agreement with the recognised organisation in accordance with Chapter 2.2 “Authorisation Agreement” of the Cabinet Regulation No. 424 Adopted 31 May 2011 Procedures for the Supervision of Classification Companies (Recognised Organisations).
Further information on the process of authorisation of a recognised organisation can be obtained from the Maritime Safety Inspectorate.
