Maritime Administration of Latvia is the authority supervising maritime safety. Maritime Administration of Latvia is a state limited liability company, it performs the functions entrusted to it by the State of Latvia.
Latvian vessels shall be registered in the Latvian Ship Register. Registered Latvian ships work in all seas and oceans of the world, with the Latvian flag always raised on them. About 350 vessels have been registered in the Ship Register. Recreational craft, sailing yachts and motor yachts, boats, mainly fishing boats shall also be registered in Latvian Ship Register.
Maritime Administration of Latvia Ship Control Inspectors supervise whether Latvian ships and foreign ships entering Latvian ports meet relevant requirements. Inspectors also monitor registered recreational craft and fishing boats.
Registry of Seamen register and list seafarers, supervise the preparation of Latvian seafarers, examine the knowledge of seafarers, issue seafarers’ documents according to their education. In Latvia there are more than 10 000 sailors.
Hydrographers of Maritime Administration of Latvia measure the depths of the sea and ports by means of vessels “Kristians Dals” and “Sonar” that are equipped with up-to-date multi-beam systems. Data from the measurements are processed and sea charts produced by cartographers. Those charts are used by all seafarers who sail in Latvian waters.
Maritime Administration of Latvia takes part in development of documents regulating maritime sector.
