Shipbuilding, modernisation and repairs

The supervision of shipbuilding, modernisation and conversion works are regulated by the Cabinet of Ministers Regulation No 439 of 07 June 2011 “Regulations on the Implementation of the State Supervision of the Flag of Ships”, Chapter 4 “Supervision of Latvian Shipbuilding and Modernisation or Conversion Works”. In accordance with these Regulations, Latvian ships are constructed in compliance with the requirements of a Recognised Organisation in accordance with SOLAS Convention Chapter II-1, Part A-1, Regulation 3-1.

In addition, the requirements set out in Chapter 2 “Requirements to be complied with when carrying out shipbuilding, modernisation, repair and conversion works” of CCabinet Regulation No. 49 Adopted 29 January 2008 “Regulations Regarding the Safety of Ships” shall be complied with when carrying out shipbuilding, modernisation, repair and conversion works on a ship.

Latvian ships shall be constructed under the supervision of a recognised organisation. The supervision of the shipbuilding of Latvian ships of gross tonnage less than 500 according to the Tonnage Certificate issued by the Inspectorate shall be carried out by the Recognised Organisation or by the Maritime Safety Inspectorate at the choice of the owner.

The modernisation, conversion or repair of a Latvian ship shall be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Recognised Organisation in accordance with SOLAS Convention Chapter II-1, Part A-1, Regulation 3-1.

Latvian ships shall be modernised or converted under the supervision of a Recognised Organisation. The supervision of the modernisation or conversion of Latvian ships with a gross tonnage less than 500 according to the Tonnage Certificate issued by the Inspectorate shall be carried out by the Recognised Organisation or the Maritime Safety Inspectorate at the choice of the owner.
