Ship’s single voyage

In cases when the ship needs to make a voyage to another berth or port outside its authorised navigation area, or if the ship does not have valid seaworthiness certificates, the shipowner may apply to the Maritime Safety Inspectorate of the Maritime Administration of Latvia with an application to allow the ship to perform a single voyage.

Depending on the situation, the Maritime Safety Inspectorate may request to draw up a project for the ship’s planned single voyage and carry out an additional survey of the vessel.

In the event of a vessel being towed, it is mandatory to draw up a project for towing of the vessel. This may be carried out by a design company recognised by the Maritime Safety Inspectorate.  Prior to the towage of the vessel, additional survey of the vessel should be carried out by the Maritime Safety Inspectorate to certify the readiness of the vessel for towage and compliance with the towage project.

The Marine Safety Inspectorate shall, on the basis of the documents received, the single voyage project and the results of the survey of the vessel, assess and determine the conditions for the single voyage, including the minimum composition of the vessel’s crew. In the event of a positive decision, the Maritime Safety Inspectorate shall issue a Single Voyage Permit to the vessel.

The shipowner is obliged to notify the Vessel Safety Inspectorate of the completion of the single voyage.
