Self-built recreational crafts and sailing yachts

Self-built recreational crafts that are built for their own needs and will not be sold on the European Union and European Economic Area market within the next 5 years shall comply at least with the Cabinet of Ministers Regulation No. 201 of 25 March 2008 “Regulations on the Safety of Recreational Crafts ”.

The construction project for such recreational crafts must be coordinated with the Maritime Safety Inspectorate. The recreational craft must be built under the supervision of the Maritime Safety Inspectorate.

Self-built recreational crafts may not be used for commercial purposes. In order for a self-built recreational craft to be used for commercial purposes, a post-construction assessment of the recreational craft must be carried out and, if necessary, the recreational craft must be converted. The owner must conclude a contract with one of the Notified Bodies, which is authorised to carry out post-construction assessment in accordance with the Cabinet of Ministers Regulation No. 201 of 12 January 2026. 27 “Regulations on the construction, conformity assessment and placing on the market of recreational craft and personal watercraft”, implementing in the Republic of Latvia the requirements of Directive 2013/53/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 November 2013 on recreational craft and personal watercraft.
